How can I stop my dog pulling on the lead?

Posted 8 Jul 2021

For your dog, a walk can be the best part of their day, but the excitement to take in the sights and sniffs can sometimes make walking a challenge.

Walking calmly next to you instead of pulling at the end of the lead can be a tricky skill for your dog to master, especially in a world full of distractions. However, with a little patience and consistency… you and your pooch have got this!

How to teach your dog to walk on a loose lead

Teaching loose lead waking means reminding your dog that being by your side is the best place in the world, even when you’re out and about.

  • Start by feeding your dog a few treats by your side
  • Slowly take a step forwards and wait for your dog to move towards you
  • As soon as your dog moves in your direction reward them with a treat
  • Take another step forward and repeat
  • You can take steps to the side, forwards and backwards and give your dog a treat for moving with you
  • Start to take a few steps forward before giving a treat, then increase to a few more and so on until you’re walking along with your dog by your side

Remember to start small and work your way up! Your dog will learn best in an environment with no distractions like your backyard. But, with practice, they will be able to master street walks in no time!

Training your dog to loose lead walk can be a fun experience for your dog for two key reasons; treats and walks! These are two of the most favoured enrichment activities for dogs. The treats should be something small and soft like chicken or cheese, so that your dog can swallow them easily while working.
